| No one has burst international cricket in recent times like SHAHID KHAN AFRIDI had against SriLanka in Kenya in the 1996-97 season. He was just 16 then had been included as a last minute replacement for a leg spinner but he turned the spotlight on to himself with one of the most devastating displays in international cricket. His Century came in just 37 balls! The record books had been re-written. In the period since, there have been times it seems he has succumbed to the pressure. Despite the immence talent he obviously Possesses, he is seen mainly as a Pinch Hitter, but one who can be more devasting than any other force in international cricket when he gets going. He's now an opener in the one-dayers and could well be called a successfull all-rounder due to his lethal leg-spinners. As a bowler, the tall SHAHID KAHN AFRIDI has an extremely fast delivery, which catches the batsman off guard. This unorthodox bowling has, however led to the downfull of many a seasoned batsman. He is not a great turner of the ball and prefers bowling flatter rather than flighting the ball, but his line and length makes him both inexpensive and dangerous. AFRIDI's brilliant fielding makes him a cricketer of the 21st century, part of the ilk that excels in all departments of the game. He can certainly be called a captain's dream because of his versatility and his ability to change the course of a match single-handedly. SHAHID KHAN AFRIDI has a big family. He has 6 brothers (Tariq Afridi, Iqbal Afridi, Mushtaq Afridi,Imran Afridi,Shoaib Afridi and Shahid Afridi .....) and 4 sisters. SHAHID is at number 6. SHAHID's younger brother Mushtaq Afridi is also playing Cricket. SHAHID got married 21 Oct 2000 with Nadia Afridi and now he has a daugter called Aqsa Afridi. SHAHID's family has also a Toyota Showroom in Sabzi Mandi, Karchi. He is very friendly and jovial person but is very shy around girls. He got married with his cousin and has clearly stated that now his attention would be divided amongst his wife and his fans. He is Very respectfull towards his elders and his parents are the most important people in the world for him. He has a lot of friends in the PAKISTAN team whom he loves and trusts. He is deeply religious and leaves everything beyond his control to Allah. he likes listening to music and is God fearing Person. SHAHID's ambition is to play Cricket, enjoy it and earn respect. In his words,"I don't think to much. i am only interested in playing Cricket and enjoying it. I do set myself certain targets at the starts of the series, look at my performance after every tour set new targets for the next series". You have a problem with your car? Don’t try to fix it, buy a new one. Afridi was the one who had to lead the team in the field. He was the one who had to take all the decisions on the ground. If a certain player did not fit well in his plans, he should have been given the power to make that player sit out. Detractors will be quick to mention that Afridi is no Imran Khan. Agreed. Why would you want a captain who has led you to 18 wins in 34 matches (all played away from home)? Why would you want a captain who was the joint-highest wicket taker at the recently concluded World Cup? Why would you want a captain who has, against all odds, managed to keep this team united under massive pressure? Why would you want a captain who led you to the semi-finals in the World Twenty20 and the ODI World Cup? For a man who led his squad to a fairy-tale run at the World Cup and brought together the whole of Pakistan, a job many of our celebrated leaders outside the world of cricket have failed to do, Afridi deserves more respect. We had Imran. We had Miandad. We had Wasim. But, if ever, there was to be a true reflection of Pakistan’s cricketing culture, a strange relationship between excitement, talent and a high degree of unpredictability, Afridi is the man. Thank him for giving us positive headlines. Thank him for that special something that he manages to pull off in the field almost always. Thank him for the celebration style that is almost iconic in nature for fans all over the world. |
